As a playwright, director and solo performer for over 40 years, John O’Keefe’s work has been produced and celebrated in Europe and the U.S. and in venues including the Second Stage Lincoln Center and Public Theater in New York, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and the Magic Theatre in the Bay Area, the Odyssey Theatre and Mark Taper Forum in LA and in regional theaters across the U.S.
As a collaborator first and foremost, John has worked with a stellar cross-section of theater artists and musicians. We have gathered together some brief tributes from various friends and colleagues who know and appreciate John and his work.
Going back to the 1970’s, John plays have been staged at many of the country’s most respected theaters. While the label “experimental” may be applied to John’s work without risk of contradiction, the more apt term might be “artful”… in that his work has always sought to touch and effect his audiences and performers at the deepest and most meaningful levels.
Here is the long and winding road of his many professional productions, starting from those early days and leading right up to the present.
O’Keefe is the author of 14 full length plays and 4 solo shows that he himself has performed.
“Mr. O’Keefe can snare his audience with his imagistic audacity and demonic narrative momentum with the gut-grabbing pull of a horror movie.”
O’Keefe has two published books, one performance DVD and is included in one anthology.
